We decided to hold the Championships towards the end of the season, given that the Scarborough Open had been cancelled for the second year in succession.

Starting on Bank Holiday Monday with the men’s singles - played under the 21up or 1.5 hours whichever comes first protocol - we started with 5 sets of matches which saw - Paul B, Derek G, John S and Graham W progress to the quarter finals. The final match in this series saw Bill E and Peter B produce a very exciting match which after 1.5 hours necessitated an extra end with the scores being 14-14. This was after Bill had opened a lead of 5 shots by the end of end 14. During the next 5 ends, Peter clawed his way back to produce a 14-14 draw. The extra end saw Peter edge the match 15-14.

The ladies produced some excellent bowling in their four matches with Pauline V, Julia H and Heather B wining their encounters. However the match of the day was unfolding on rink 1 where Wendy S led 14-11 after 15 ends. By the end of the 19th end the lead was reduced to 2. After 21 ends, Pauline T led 18-16, the 22nd end saw the lead return to Wendy only for Pauline to win the last end to triumph 21-19.

The afternoon session saw the men’s quarter finals start. Tom R, John S are through to the semis to be joined by Paul B - 2020’s champion who came back from 8-14 down after 14 ends to win 21-16. He is joined by John H - new to bowling this season who was very consistent and in fine form defeating Peter B 23-9.

We now prepare for the Pairs on Wednesday.
