The excellent weather continued as we welcomed over 70 spectators, 20 players and more than a dozen club members who were helping the event run smoothly.

Given that some players were involved in more than one final there was an early start, the last match a thrilling mixed triples took to the green after 4 pm. With Wendy organising the refreshments, John S the green, Pauline T & C undertaking marking duties, all spectators were treated to an excellent 6 finals, buoyed by excellent refreshments.

The Mixed Pairs saw a local pair from Scalby take on a pair from the Midlands over 18 ends. The Scalby pair opened up a 7-0 lead after 4 ends but a 7 on end 13 saw the gap close to 12-12. Approaching the final end the score stood at 15 -15. On the last end the Scalby pair of P Miller & S Stamford prevailed winning 16-15.

5 further finals occupied the spectators attention in the afternoon.

The Ladies Pairs pitched P Lawray & M Revell against S Wakefield and J Senior. The opening 9 ends saw Lawray/Revell opening up a 6 shot lead. Gradually the advantage decreased until after 17 ends the score was 16-16. In the final end, Larway/Revell secured 1 to win the trophy 17-16.

Meanwhile the Men’s Pairs saw S Kelly/J Anderson up against C Gibbons/B Brooks. Again this was a close match which saw the scores tied at 13-13 after 15 ends, however the next 2 ends saw Kelly/Anderson score 9 to run out winners 22-13.

The Ladies Singles saw S Allen up against A Patten. First to 21 was the target and after 15 ends Ann was leading 15-10. Sue rallied to score 11 over the next 5 to win 21-15.

The Men’s Final pitted S Clark against J Suchecki. This was an interesting match with scores being level after 11 ends. at 7 each. A number of significantly scoring ends saw Jan Suchecki run out winner 20-12. The winner had a brief time to relax, refresh and refocus ahead of the mixed triples which saw a team from Scalby take on the Suchecki family - singles winer Jan, his wife and sister - both of whom had only been bowling for a few years. This was a riveting game, greatly appreciated by the spectators . However at the end of end 13 the Suchecki’s had opened a four shot lead, only for the Scalby team to close this to 2 shots with one end to play, and what an end it was. With one wood to play, Scalby were 2 shots up thus a deciding end loomed. The last wood removed a Scalby wood meaning they had lost by 1 shot - 15-16.

Thanks to the great work undertaken by the South Cliff team, especially Wendy, Pauline T & Joyce. Thanks to all who helped with setting up and taking down the green and the multiplicity of tasks required to enable this excellent event take place. In addition it, as ever, has been a significant fund raiser for the club and we estimate that the week will see the Club enhance its bank balance by close to a £1000. Well done to all involved. Many thanks to the Scarborough Open Committee who organised the event.
